A Perfect Ten

The indoor-friendly weather earlier this year led me into some off-season organizing, sorting through my meager DVD collection: “keepers” in this pile, “sellers” over there. The disc I now held in my hand, I realized, was released ten years ago.

2006? Whoa, ten years? You kidding me? I figured that milestone at least deserved a screening, so I made some popcorn and settled back in the recliner.

The movie?  Disney Pixar’s “Cars”.

If you’ve never seen this one, you deserve the pleasure. Especially if you have any interest at all in… well, cars. You might think it’s a kids’ movie, but it’s not. The animation is stunning and realistic. Even if you forget about the technical side of the movie there are so many genuine “car guy/car gal” moments and details that you could watch it several times through and not catch them all. For perhaps the best treat of all, read through the movie credits. The list is full of names with genuine car chops; people who have paid serious dues in the automotive and racing world: Richard and Lynda Petty, Paul Newman, Humpy Wheeler, Mario Andretti, Michael Schumacher, Ford design chief J Mays, Darrell Waltrip,  Dale Eardhardt Jr., and my favorite: ol’ “Stroker” hisself, Tom Medley.

So as I watched it again for the first time in a long while, I decided that after 10 years on the odometer (!?) “Cars” will remain in the permanent keeper pile. And it may have just taken its rightful place as one of my favorite movies. Ever.
