The “Grand-Daddy”

As I look at this year’s schedule of gearhead gatherings around my neighborhood (and there are a LOT of ’em!) I’m amazed at how many are into their second or third decade.  So how about one that’s into its fourth decade, closing in on FIVE!? Among our local outdoor shows, you could call this one “The Grand-Daddy”: the Sisseton Car and Motorcycle Show in Sisseton, South Dakota. This year, June 2nd marks the 48th edition of a show that in past years has literally filled Sisseton’s main street with cars. Everything from brass-era high-wheelers to hotrodded late models rolled in; some years the spread spilled over to side streets and even the adjacent parking lots. Thinking about that prompted a dig through my slide archives, where I unearthed a few moldy images that I figure were shot sometime in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. The photos of the individual cars were taken during a classic car parade that rolled down main street after the awards presentation.

So, to recap: 48th Annual Sisseton Car and Motorcycle Show, Saturday June 2, 2018 on main street, Sisseton SD. Registration is a mere 10-spot. Check in from 8 to 10 at Dakota Pawn on the south end of Main. Top 20 awards, special awards like Cruisers’ Choice, Best Mopar, Best Ford, Best GM, Best High School Car, Best Project Car, Best of Show, Best Bike and others. Cash door prizes, dash plaques to the first 150 cars, food booths, and a free swap meet (bring your own tables). Awards at 2:30 PM, and an after-show social at Billy’s Cafe in Sisseton.

I figure this year’s get-together, closing in on a half-century’s worth of tradition, should be well worth checking out. Hope to see you there!
