It might not necessarily be a gearhead’s only “trip of a lifetime”, but it has to rank right up there. I’ve been wanting to visit for a long time and finally made the trip. Not a side trip, either. Some six hours one way, with one express purpose. Destination: Lincoln Nebraska and the Museum of American Speed.
Part of that trip had to do with a recently added exhibit at the museum- the Ed Iskenderian roadster.
I don’t mind telling you that I felt a genuine sense of reverence as I stood next to that iconic hot rod. It was built by Ed in the 1930’s and is one of the few surviving examples from those early days. The important place it holds in hotrodding history simply cannot be overstated. But as impressive as it was, that exhibit was still just part of the reason for the trip. The Museum of American Speed has three floors filled with just about everything related to racing and this culture of speed we all love. I wanted to see it all.
